Welcome to Ty Gwyn/Croeso i Ty Gwyn
Ty Gwyn Education Centre is a secondary age Pupil Referral Unit, located in Aberdare and serving all of Rhondda Cynon Taff.
The small class provision and specialised support for children and young people aged 11-16 is based on high quality teaching and learning and a trauma informed approach to presenting social, emotional and mental health needs.
There are 8 classes across Key Stage 3 and 4, nearly all learners are dually registered with a mainstream school. Learners in Key Stage 3 are always considered for re-integration where there is appropriate evidence this would better meet their needs.
Learners in KS3 follow an integrated, skills based curriculum, combined with some specialist teaching, which fulfills the 4 purposes of the planned new curriculum; to be ambitious and capable, to be enterprising and creative, to be ethical and informed and to be healthy and confident.
This is underpinned by the development of Welsh culture and the language, personal health and well-being and the development of learner voice and their understanding of rights and responsibilities across the PRU.
In KS4, all learners follow core and foundation subject GCSEs in English, Maths, Science, Art and PSE and have a choice of options in Sport and Fitness, Construction or Catering and Hospitality. This ensures Ty Gwyn meets the wide range of needs and abilities within the group.
Where learners join the PRU late in the Key Stage, a range of additional, modular qualifications such as SWEET BTEC and Prince's Trust are used to ensure everyone can achieve and progress to a suitable destination such as college or work place training.

All staff, both teaching, support staff and ancillary, work as a team with a shared vision of "believing in young people" and look forward to continuing this journey over the coming school year.

Should you have any concerns regarding a learner or member of staff, please speak to the Safeguarding Officer, Victoria Cox-Wall. If the SO is not available, please speak to the Deputy Safeguarding Officer Natalie Davies and share your concerns.
If neither is available, please ensure you speak to another member of staff.

Children Looked After (CLA)
Victoria Cox-Wall is the designated teacher for Children Looked After.
This means the leadership role in promoting the educational achievement of every looked after child at Ty Gwyn. We aim to make a positive difference by promoting a whole school culture where the personalised learning needs of every looked after child matters and their personal, emotional and academic needs are prioritised.
