  • Remembrance Day 2024

    Thu 14 Nov 2024

Ty Gwyn marked Remembrance Day in school with an assembly and very respectful 1 minute silence.

We shared the beautiful and haunting poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

            In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

            In Flanders fields.

  • OperationBang! Came to visit today with PC Stacey and PCSO Danielle!

    Fri 25 Oct 2024

    The message is safety first!

Pumpkin-carving, fancy dress and spectacular firework displays; Halloween and Bonfire Night are often highlights in the family calendar.

But with a small minority seeing the autumnal events as an excuse to act in an antisocial manner, the period can leave many in our communities feeling anxious, intimidated and fearful.

With that in mind, South Wales Police will once again be supporting Op Bang, helping our communities to enjoy the festivities safely while asking them to remember that Halloween and Bonfire Night are Not Fun For Everyone.

The period is traditionally extremely busy for the emergency services; last year South Wales Police received just over 1,828 calls for service* on Halloween, October 31st, and a further 1,534 on November 5th, Bonfire Night. Of those calls 757 were via the emergency 999 number on Halloween, while 694 emergency calls were received on Bonfire Night.

While demand often peaks on those dates, the period before, during and after those dates is also often extremely busy, placing additional demand on police and partners.

Our officers will continue to be visible in our communities in the run up to, and during, the festivities to help prevent and detect antisocial behaviour (ASB) and disorder.

Neighbourhood teams will be working closely with local authority partners and retailers during the next few weeks, reminding everyone of their responsibilities and sharing materials which can be displayed in shops to how a united front against ASB.

Our School Liaison Co-ordinators and partner agencies will also be visiting schools throughout the force area to educate pupils on the dangers of fireworks and bonfires as well as the consequences of antisocial behaviour.

  • Show Racism the Red Card @ Ty Gwyn

    Fri 18 Oct 2024

    Wear it Red Day!

Everyone at Ty Gwyn has worn red to show our support for the Show Racism the Red Card campaign today!

In our assembly we showed a great video from Shaka Hislop the Newcastle United footballer (retired) about the racism he experienced and how the power of an individual can make a difference. If everyone takes a stance, we can change this!

PC Arndell and PC Gardener also visited us with the Hate Crime roadshow and engaged with everyone over lunch, taking a few fingerprints and details (!) but also focusing on the serious messages of Hate Crime week.

  • Goodbye and Good luck to our Cover Supervisor Pip!

    Sat 05 Oct 2024

Today we said good bye to our Cover Supervisor Pip Goswell-Milne, after just over 2 years.

Pip will be missed by pupils and colleagues alike as a great support, source of knowledge and useful information but more importantly someone child focused, caring and conscientious.

They leave us to take a post with the emergency services closer to home. It might be a bit quieter than Ty Gwyn and we are sure you will miss it as much as you'll be missed!

As Pip has learned so much Welsh since moving to Wales:

  • Welcome to the new school year!

    Fri 13 Sep 2024

    Welcome back to school!

At the start of the new school year we have many previous pupils returning and are welcoming many new learners to Ty Gwyn! For some of these pupils it’s their first experience of secondary school and all the challenge and positives that brings.
It’s important to stress the need for regular attendance at school, your child should be at school unless unwell or there is a medical or dental appointment. Please ensure you ring school if your child is absent so it can be recorded, unexplained absence will be followed up by Ellie Weatherill our new Family Engagement Officer. We can support you in many different ways but this is a focus for us this year.
A polite reminder, term time holidays must be authorised to avoid a fine, please complete the holiday form on our attendance page. Thank you!

Further, while we don’t have a uniform, your child should wear appropriate shoes and clothing, for example no sliders or flip flops. Phones are not permitted in school, likewise vapes and chargers of any kind.
We will contact you regularly and where there are areas where we can work together to support your child we will ask you to be our partners in this and follow up with your child.
We will shortly be organising a parent/carer/guardian evening and will offer in person, phone or video appointments and look forward to meeting you then. We do have some new staff for you to be aware of:

    Chris Mackie KS3 Teacher

    Nathaniel Freeman English Teacher

    Kelly Blenkinsopp-Clarke Therapeutic Practitioner

    Christian Davies Temporary KS3 Teacher

Their photos will shortly be on our website staff page. Our next community event is the Macmillan Coffee Morning to which you are all invited: 27th September 1.30pm hope to see you there!

  • End of year goodbyes!

    Sat 20 Jul 2024

The end of term means some sad goodbyes to the Ty Gwyn team:

Steph Stevens is leaving us to move to Australia with her family and will be teaching English there! We wish her luck and every success in her new life. She will be greatly missed by us all as a friend and colleague and by the pupils as their dedicated teacher.
Damien Murphy leaves us too, not going so far, to Nyth Y Deryn in Cardiff, to be closer to home. We wish him well and every success, we hope to meet up for some

matches and sharing of good practice. Best of luck, your knowledge and skills in outdoor leaning will be missed!

  • Richard Parks opens our brand new bike shed with thanks to Wooden Spoon the Rugby Charity!

    Fri 12 Jul 2024

Such a great event for the children and young people of Ty Gwyn to welcome the well known adventurer Richard Parks to school today!

Last year, Wooden Spoon Charity funded a brand new wooden bike shed, six top of the range bikes and safety equipment and funding for cycling safety training. Mr Damien Murphy worked with the charity to achieve this great facility. As you may know, we don't have a field as such, but a very large yard area, perfect for cycling!

The pupils were presented with their cycling proficiency certificates by Richard who also cut the ribbon! Richard and the other visitors then toured the school and spoke to so many pupils we thought they were staying!

Thankyou to the Wooden Spoon Charity for their generosity towards Ty Gwyn.

  • The Big Lunch success!

    Wed 12 Jun 2024

    The Ty Gwyn Big Lunch!

Thanks to everyone who came to share with us today, so lovely to welcome some of our families and carers, some Y6s who might join us soon and some partners from the local authority. Great that you could join us to share some lovely sandwiches and cakes (yum!).

What is the big idea around the big lunch?!

The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours and communities, with millions of people coming together to share friendship, food and fun and celebrate community connections.

An idea from the Eden Project in 2009, made possible by The National Lottery, The Big Lunch makes a real difference to how we see and feel about our communities; it’s an opportunity to share cultures, experiences, stories, ideas and skills – helping people grow local connections and feel a greater sense of belonging to where they live, with a whopping one in five of the UK population taking part last year.
