  • Great news re our pupils’ exam success!

    Mon 20 Jan 2025

Ty Gwyn is proud to share news re the positive exam results achieved by our Year 11 pupils in the summer of 2024.

The comparative exam data from learners in PRUs across Wales is published every January.
As you would expect in a specialist provision, we have a wide range of children and young people joining us at different stages of their education, some facing real challenges in their lives.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our amazing staff and the support of our families, the cohort achieved more than double the Welsh national average for learners attending a PRU in their exam points (called the capped 9 score) and well above the Welsh national average in literacy, numeracy and science points. This means all our learners were able to move to their post 16 choices with  great pride and all their potential!

    Well done to everyone!

  • Christmas Wishes to all!

    Thu 19 Dec 2024

All the staff at Ty Gwyn wish all our pupils and families a very Happy Christmas.

We have worked hard this term and had some fun as well, lots of challenges and lots of progress.

Christmas is also a time to think of others and many staff and friends of Ty Gwyn in the community have donated presents and treats to ensure every child had a gift bag to take home. Any finance left will be added to the school account for the benefit of the pupils next year.

We have also linked with the local Trussell Trust branch to support our families at this time and donated hampers and other items ourselves.

The ancient African word “ubuntu” means humanity to

others, the true spirit of Christmas and our final

    thought of the year.

See you all 6th January 2025!

  • Christmas Fayre 🎄

    Tue 17 Dec 2024

    A huge thank you!

Thankyou to everyone who joined us for our postponed Christmas Fayre today, perhaps it was meant to be as we had even more guests than we could have hoped!

It was lovely to see everyone and when we have “repaid” the cost of materials, there will be over £200 raised for our school account where all funds are devoted to enriching the school experience of our pupils.
Head over to the gallery section to see some pics!

    Merry Christmas everyone!

  • Battery Recycling Challenge

    Sat 07 Dec 2024

Ty Gwyn is taking part in the battery recycling challenge with Bryn Pica Waste and Recycling facility.

Its the time of year when you get the decorations out, change the batteries, get batteries for the toys and gifts too, so send them in (in a secure bag) and we'll take them off your hands!

Lets see how many bins we can fill #reducereuserecycle

  • Stars in our Schools!

    Wed 04 Dec 2024

This week is a time to celebrate the Stars in our Schools, the teaching assistants! These are the biggest part of our school and essential to the smooth running of the school and much needed support for our vulnerable learners.

Thanks to the local branch of UNISON for the goodie bags.

We also had a lovely celebration for our temporary teaching assistant Demi who won "TA of the Month" from her employment agency Vision for Education. Well done and congratulations, enjoy the hamper!

  • Remembrance Day 2024

    Thu 14 Nov 2024

Ty Gwyn marked Remembrance Day in school with an assembly and very respectful 1 minute silence.

We shared the beautiful and haunting poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

            In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

            In Flanders fields.

  • OperationBang! Came to visit today with PC Stacey and PCSO Danielle!

    Fri 25 Oct 2024

    The message is safety first!

Pumpkin-carving, fancy dress and spectacular firework displays; Halloween and Bonfire Night are often highlights in the family calendar.

But with a small minority seeing the autumnal events as an excuse to act in an antisocial manner, the period can leave many in our communities feeling anxious, intimidated and fearful.

With that in mind, South Wales Police will once again be supporting Op Bang, helping our communities to enjoy the festivities safely while asking them to remember that Halloween and Bonfire Night are Not Fun For Everyone.

The period is traditionally extremely busy for the emergency services; last year South Wales Police received just over 1,828 calls for service* on Halloween, October 31st, and a further 1,534 on November 5th, Bonfire Night. Of those calls 757 were via the emergency 999 number on Halloween, while 694 emergency calls were received on Bonfire Night.

While demand often peaks on those dates, the period before, during and after those dates is also often extremely busy, placing additional demand on police and partners.

Our officers will continue to be visible in our communities in the run up to, and during, the festivities to help prevent and detect antisocial behaviour (ASB) and disorder.

Neighbourhood teams will be working closely with local authority partners and retailers during the next few weeks, reminding everyone of their responsibilities and sharing materials which can be displayed in shops to how a united front against ASB.

Our School Liaison Co-ordinators and partner agencies will also be visiting schools throughout the force area to educate pupils on the dangers of fireworks and bonfires as well as the consequences of antisocial behaviour.

  • Show Racism the Red Card @ Ty Gwyn

    Fri 18 Oct 2024

    Wear it Red Day!

Everyone at Ty Gwyn has worn red to show our support for the Show Racism the Red Card campaign today!

In our assembly we showed a great video from Shaka Hislop the Newcastle United footballer (retired) about the racism he experienced and how the power of an individual can make a difference. If everyone takes a stance, we can change this!

PC Arndell and PC Gardener also visited us with the Hate Crime roadshow and engaged with everyone over lunch, taking a few fingerprints and details (!) but also focusing on the serious messages of Hate Crime week.

  • Goodbye and Good luck to our Cover Supervisor Pip!

    Sat 05 Oct 2024

Today we said good bye to our Cover Supervisor Pip Goswell-Milne, after just over 2 years.

Pip will be missed by pupils and colleagues alike as a great support, source of knowledge and useful information but more importantly someone child focused, caring and conscientious.

They leave us to take a post with the emergency services closer to home. It might be a bit quieter than Ty Gwyn and we are sure you will miss it as much as you'll be missed!

As Pip has learned so much Welsh since moving to Wales:

    Pob lwc gyda'ch dechrau newydd!
