  • Goodbye and good luck to all our Y11s ❤️

Fri 28 May 2021 All of Ty Gwyn

Today was the end of compulsory schooling for our small group of Y11s. We have had a great day out (crazy golf, digital darts and lunch) and made some fab memories!

As a small school, we know our learners so well and their amazing qualities, strong characters and huge potential. We wish them all well, our thoughts and best wishes are in the personalised year books as we didn’t see everyone today.

Thankyou for being part of Ty Gwyn, take our good wishes and thoughts with you, believe in yourselves, we do!

  • Dangerous Tik Tok magnet stunt/trick

    Sun 23 May 2021

There have been lots of stories in the weekend newspapers and social media platforms regarding the new Tik Tok stunt or craze to place two magnets either side of the tongue to look like a tongue piercing.
This can lead to accidental swallowing of the magnets with very serious consequences. Please ensure you speak to your child about this if they use Tik Tok or other social media platforms.

    TES Award shortlisting 2021

Ty Gwyn is shortlisted for a TES Award in the Wellbeing and Mental Award 2021!

This recognises our trauma informed work to support the mental health of children and young people who are placed in Ty Gwyn at times of crisis and trauma or difficulty in their lives.

The award ceremony (virtual) is 25th June  and as one of only 2 schools in Wales to be nominated in any category, we are very proud and pleased to be highlighted for our work!

  • Seesaw and consent/option choice forms

    Wed 12 May 2021

    Parents and Carers

Please ensure you return the Seesaw consent form to school as soon as possible. We will then send your QR code home via post for you to access photos of your child and their in school activities. It’s great to see what they get up to and their hard work!
If your child is in Year 9, please return their option choice form ASAP or we may not be able to guarantee their first choice.
Finally, please return consent forms for the local park visits and we can get out and about to enjoy the (hopefully) better weather!
    Thankyou.

  • The latest news update (Newsletter is on it's way too!)

    Tue 11 May 2021 Mrs Cox-Wall

As you know we returned to "full" school on 12th April, many learners have attended safely during the Level 4 restrictions and we are proud Ty Gwyn has remained open for vulnerable and front line workers' children throughout the entire school year. We remained virus free with careful social distancing and an enhanced cleaning regime we are  continuing to maintain.

I take this opportunity to thank all Ty Gwyn staff, our teachers, support staff, admin staff, cleaning and site team, catering staff and you as parents and carers for working with us to maintain learning and keep us all safe.

"Inside the White House" newsletter is on it's way home (also in the newsletter section of the website) with the latest news included about our day to day lives, never a dull moment!

Just to finish, we will be saying goodbye to our Y11 learners on 28th May, we will be holding a learner only event due to the continued restrictions but we will celebrate in style and give them the send off they deserve! We will definitely miss them all and are proud of their personal achievements, GCSEs and other triumphs!

Thank you all, please contact school via the website or phone if you need any information.

  • Eco Schools Silver Award

    Fri 16 Apr 2021

Ty Gwyn has now moved from Bronze Award Eco-School to Silver Award!

This means our learners have participated in developing our ethos and way of working in the following ways:

    • Environmental Issues have been covered in at least three areas of the curriculum.
    • The work is evident in our schemes of work, pupil work, lessons plans, resources or on displays around school.
    • We have a prominent and designated Eco-Board detailing all Eco-Schools activities. Our Eco-Board is regularly updated.
    • Our Eco-Committee uses a variety of mediums to help communicate their actions in newsletters and on school website.
    • The wider community is involved in activities going on in and around the school (parents, carers, local businesses, environmental organisations, local churches and residential groups).

Onto Gold Award next - and we gain the Eco Schools Flag!

  • Project Vote

    Tue 13 Apr 2021

    Project Vote

Ty Gwyn has signed up to be part of "Project Vote". This is a school based election which will be similar to the actual May Senedd elections in Wales. We have specific materials from the office of the Children's Commissioner for Wales to teach our children and young people about the voting process, making a choice and the implications of who "wins", this is part of becoming active and informed citizens and is a protected right for children to have their voices heard and taken seriously under the UNCRC.

Children will see video manifestos from the various parties competing locally and then have the chance to make their choice and vote in school and on line! If you have any election materials posted through your door please do send them to school with your child, it all helps with developing our understanding and ability to make informed choices.

Staff, of course, will be "neutral" in their views and encourage open discussion and evaluation by our learners.

See below for the message from the CC Sally Holland or check out:

Message from Sally Holland, Children’s Commissioner for Wales:

Over 100 schools have signed up to Project Vote, a parallel Senedd election aimed at young people aged 11-15. The election is ready to go in schools – with pre-written face-to-face lesson plans, remote learning packs, and an online voting slip based on the school’s postcode. Schools have flexibility to run their election at any point between April 19-30.

    Update

Local Candidate Mia James is visiting Tuesday for a Q and A! Exciting times 🗳

4 Y11s and 1 Y10 interviewed Mia today and asked some very searching questions. Mia also showed us her ballot paper and explained the Senedd voting systems (over 16s)  and the additional vote for Police and Crime Commissioners (over 18s only). Thank you Mia and we wish you luck.

  • Investors in Families Lockdown Award

    Thu 25 Mar 2021
We are very pleased to be recognised for our work with Ty Gwyn families and children during this tough lockdown period. Along with lots of our neighbouring schools, staff have gone above and beyond to stay in contact via phone and iPads, with letters and personalised packs posted home and visits (where permitted). Well done Mr Petts for our strong submission and well done to all staff for their hard work, care and commitment!
We look forward to everyone returning on 12th April for the summer term! Hopefully a healthy and safe one!

  • Exams update Y11

    Fri 19 Mar 2021

For Y11 learners and some of our Y10s, taking qualifications, there won’t be exams as you know.
We are drafting an individual assessment plan for each learner and this will be shared with learners in Form Family Time and posted home by 26th March so parents and carers are aware of what is needed. This will also contain a timeline for you to understand and follow the process in this unusual situation.
This means it is essential that your child attends school on the correct days. This is to ensure that all past papers and assessments are completed to evidence the proposed grade - without this evidence we may not be able to enter or propose a grade.

Please do contact school if you have questions or want to discuss anything. We will do our very best to help and support your child and work with you to achieve the best outcomes we can.
    Mrs Cox-Wall
