  • Mighty Re-cyclers at Ty Gywn!

    Tue 02 Sep 2025

Ty Gwyn staff and pupils take care to recycle whatever waste we can.

As an RCT Eco-School, we take on all the challenges and aim to beat ourselves each year...

We have been awarded a certificate for our battery recycling - 10.7kg!

That is a lot of batteries prevented from going to landfill, if you have any at home, send them in and we will safely recycle them for you. Batteries are well known for their harmful chemical content when breaking down, lets do our bit and see if we can beat that number this year!

We also recycled all our Easter Egg packaging from April, not quite as heavy but very positive and our discarded Christmas cards also. Well done Mr Mackie for organising us as well :)

    Keep up this great effort!

We are recycling batteries again this year 2025-26, don’t bin them, send them in to us!

  • Y11 Success!

    Mon 25 Aug 2025

    Well done to all

    our 2025 Y11 learners!

This summer Ty Gwyn had the usual small group of learners succeed across the board in their GCSE and Vocational qualifications.

These exams are key to being able to take the next positive steps in post 16 learning and employment and for our learners, the journeys are very personal.

We have learners going on to every level of course at several colleges and two have secured part time work

    in addition to their studies.
I thank the learners and families for their hard work and the Ty Gwyn (and Ty Castan) staff for their tireless efforts to secure these qualifications and pathways for our learners. Congratulations to all!

  • Opportunity for parents and carers to have their say on the Additional Learning Needs system

    Fri 04 Jul 2025

Opportunity for parents and carers to have their say on the Additional Learning Needs system

Ty Gwyn have worked with Arad Research to gain the views of children in regards to the new Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system.

Arad have also been asked by Welsh Government to speak with parents and carers of children and young people aged 0–25 to understand their experiences of the ALN system and gather their views. This important research will help the Welsh Government to understand how it can continue to improve the new ALN system.

If you are interested in taking part in a discussion of around 20-30 minutes with researchers from Arad about your experiences of the ALN system, please complete your details on the form at the link below.

All contributions to the evaluation will be kept confidential by Arad. None of the information you provide will be shared with your child's education provider or local authority. Further information on how we will use the information can be found at the link below. https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/parents-carers-ALN/

  • Hoax bomb threats

    Sun 15 Jun 2025

Our attention was drawn last night to a post on an “Aberdare Sells” page on Facebook. This post made threats to plant devices at Ty Gwyn and other locations in Aberdare.
Several residents reported this to the police who have  investigated and responded that this was a malicious hoax. There is no risk to any residents or properties.
If anyone has any information, please contact South Wales Police with this reference number: 2500188042.

    Thankyou.

  • UNICEF Soccer Aid ⚽️

    Fri 13 Jun 2025

As a Rights Respecting School, we support UNICEF Soccer Aid annually.
Check out the gallery tab for pics of the boys v girls football match and ball challenges!

The boys claimed victory with a lot of goals, but after a VAR (Very Analytical Review) process conducted by Mrs Cox-Wall, the girls were handed victory as they were clearly the best!
BUT… the best part really was being able to play together and raise over £250 for UNICEF 🩵
