Ty Gwyn is officially an ELKLAN Communication Friendly School!
Wed 01 Mar 2023After a year’s hard work by all our teaching and support staff to develop children and young peoples’ communication skills, language and ability to develop in this area as they progress through school, we have gained our communication friendly schools status.
Being a communication friendly school means we recognise, understand and support our learners to develop in this area and know the value of this will positively impact their lives.
Well done to Mrs Davies our ALNCO for leading us through many the phases of CPD and implementation. -

Letter re the planned industrial action on 2nd March
Thu 16 Feb 2023Dear Parent/Carer,
As you will be aware, the National Education Union (NEU) has announced a further three days of intended industrial action. The proposed industrial action dates are as follows: Thursday 2nd March 2023 Wednesday 15th March 2023 Thursday 16th March 2023 The decision regarding whether your child’s school will remain open on these dates will be made by your child’s school, based on the school’s individual context and risk assessments. Your child’s school will aim to let you know whether the school will be open at least three working days before each of these dates. Pupils Eligible for Free School Meals Where schools have decided to close in advance of planned industrial action, only learners eligible for free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch if this is needed. Your child’s school will be in touch with you shortly to establish your child’s needs. Pre-ordered packed lunches for learners eligible to free school meals can be collected from your child’s school between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on the day of the planned industrial action. The Council will not be providing packed lunches to learners entitled to a free school meal under the Universal Primary Free School Meal Offer in nursery, reception and year 1 classes. Faith, Welsh Medium and secondary school learners that are eligible to a free school meal and some special school learners (without specific dietary needs) who access school transport will be able to collect a packed lunch from a school in their local community. If your child is in this category, your child’s school will be in contact shortly to ask about your child’s packed lunch needs, including dietary needs and allergens, and the preferred school for collection. Please make sure you advise the school of your child’s dietary requirements as the suppliers of your child’s packed lunch will need to be aware of these.
School lunches In schools that are not closed, Catering Services will provide a lunch service as normal. Breakfast Club Your child’s school will advise you if breakfast club will be operating on the proposed industrial action days. School Transport Parents and carers are advised that home-to-school transport for eligible pupils will continue to run as normal unless a school has decided to close before the day of planned industrial action. Where learners are transported to school and classes or year groups are affected by the strike action on the actual day of strike action, they will need to remain in school. Transport will be unable to undertake additional morning return journeys and drop offs. Should learners need to return home, parents and/or carers will be advised of the need to collect their child/ren from school. This is to ensure the safety of your child/ren. Schools are working closely with their governing bodies and the local authority to minimise the disruption as far as possible, and we appreciate your support at this time. Your child’s school will contact you directly and update you on local arrangements.
Many thanks,
Gaynor Davies Director of Education and Inclusion Services.

Tree planting with Keep Wales Tidy
Fri 27 Jan 2023Ty Gwyn has been very lucky to secure 140 tree saplings in conjunction with Keep Wales Tidy for the school grounds.
As with most schools, our yard is surrounded by functional metal fencing, the trees we planted to day will not only mask the fence and improve the appearance of the yard but will provide a home to lots of different flora and fauna. Trees also clean the air and reduce levels of pollution (as school transport vehicles enter the yard).
A great day's work everyone and thanks Mr Murphy for organising!

Holocaust Memorial Day 2023
Fri 27 Jan 2023All Ty Gwyn learners attended a special assembly today, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and acknowledge genocides all over the world, with the Chair of the Management Committee, Martyn Silezin.
Mr Silezin's father was Polish but because of his Russian surname, he and his family were taken to concentration camps by the Nazis who carried out this heinous persecution of groups they wanted to exterminate. Mr Silezin (senior) escaped and came to the UK, his brother John also escaped (twice) by holding up his trousers as if he had been given old clothes - as someone would be when leaving the camp. The brothers didn't find each other when the war was over and it is not known what happened to John.
Mr Silezin intends to go to Poland and look at the records and try to trace what happened to John later this year.
Both John and Mr Silezin's father have now passed away but their remarkable story of daring courage in the face of such horror lives on.
All children were extremely respectful and several insightful questions were asked. We also held a moment's thought for those who didn't escape and those killed in other genocides since.

Letter to parents and carers re the planned industrial action by the NEU
Thu 26 Jan 2023Dear Parent/Carer,
As you may be aware, the National Education Union (NEU) has announced four days of intended industrial action. The proposed industrial action dates are as follows:
• Wednesday 1st February 2023
• Tuesday 14th February 2023
• Wednesday 15th March 2023
• Thursday 16th March 2023
The decision regarding whether your child’s school will remain open on these dates will be made by your child’s school, based on the school’s individual context and risk assessments. Your child’s school will aim to let you know whether the school will be open at least three working days before each of these dates. Where schools have made a decision to close in advance of planned industrial action, pupils eligible for free schools (eFSM) meals will be provided with a packed lunch the day before. eFSM pupils attending school on the day of planned industrial action will receive a free school meal as normal unless the headteacher determines to close the school prior to lunchtime. In this case, a packed lunch will be made available to eFSM pupils in the morning to take home with them. Parents and carers are advised that home-to-school transport for eligible pupils will continue to run as normal (unless a school has determined to close prior to the day of planned industrial action). However, there is a risk that on the day of planned industrial action a school or a year group will be forced to close due to staff supervision levels, and parents/carers of younger pupils should make themselves or another responsible adult available during the morning of the day, to collect their child from their dedicated bus stop/pick-up point at short notice.
Schools are working closely with the local authority to minimise the disruption as far as possible, and we appreciate your support for all our staff and pupils. Your school will update you directly on local arrangements and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops. Kind regards,
Gaynor Davies
Director of Education and Inclusion Services
